Holden Village Staff Experience August, 2003

View tidepooling pictures

In August, 2003 I spent most of the month as a volunteer staff member at Holden Village, in a remote location in the northern Cascade mountains of Washington state.  I'm grateful to all of you who have expressed interest in my trip.  Here's an opportunity to learn more.  I'd love to hear from you.

Why did I do it?  Well, I believe that places can call a person, and for about 15 years, Holden was calling me.  I wanted to go with all my heart, for an extended period, to become part of the community and to allow it to work its way with me.  But how could I afford that?  Easy: volunteer as a staff member.  Room, board, classes, community, hiking equipment, wonderful friends, spectacular scenery are all available in exchange for about 36 hours of work per week.  It was a no-brainer; I applied in March and was accepted, and on August 1, 2003, I started heading north.

Just wanted to dispel any notion that this trip was for the purpose of serving others.  Sorry.  I'm good, but not that good...

Don't be surprised if your name appears in the text on these pages.  This site is for all of you, and I want it to be conversational.
